Volvo Ocean Race - No yacht charter holiday!
Love Yacht Racing? Well the Volvo Ocean Race is most certainly not a relaxing yacht charter holiday, but it is clearly a great adventure and is now underway - so what do you know about this round the world yacht race? Find out more here;
Formerly known as the Whitbread Round the World Race, the Volvo Ocean Race is held every 3 years and the first race was in 1973, and started on the 8th September from Portsmouth in the United Kingdom. Originally the course followed the original route of the square riggers that carried cargo around the world in the 19th Century, now the route takes in 11 ports and starts in Spain, Alicante, and finishes in Gothenburg, Sweden, and will take competitors almost 9 months to complete!
The worst weather conditions can be expected in the Southern Ocean - wind speeds can get up to 60 knots with 100 foot waves! Not for the faint-hearted!
Did you know that there are no prizes for winning the race? It is more a matter of pride and the sense of accomplishment, and this year is the longest route in the race’s history - it takes in five continents, four oceans and covers almost 39,000 nautical miles!
